A Clinical Review of the Pediatric Surgical Patients

Abstract
A clinical review was made of 475 pediatric surgical patients under 15 years of age seen at Dept. of Surgery of General Surgery, Pusan National University Hospital, College of Medicine from Jan. 1957 through May 1968.
The results obtained are set out below:
(1) Main diseases were as following:
Various accidents.......................................................70 cases, 14.74%
Burns ............................................................................67 cases, 14.11%
Ileal perforation..........................................................61 cases, 12.84%
Apppendicitis..............................................................57 cases, 12.00%
Intussusception...........................................................54 cases, 11.36%
Others.........................................................................166 cases, 34.94%
(2) The ratio of males to females was 1.9:1. The largest number of cases were in children under 3 years of age(37.04%).
(3) Under "various accidents", the sex ratio was 2:1(M:F) and the largest number of cases occured in children from 10 to 11 years of age(20.00%).
(4) Among the burns, the sex ratio was about 1:1(M:F) and the largest number of cases occured in children under 3 years of age(52.24%).
(5) Amongst the children with ileal perforation, the sex ratio was 2:1 (M:F) and the largest number of cases in children of 12 and 13 years of age (24.59%).
(6) Among the cases of appendicitis, the sex ratio was 1.5:1 (M:F) and the largest number of cases occured in children from 10 to 11 years of age (31.58%).
(7) of these with intussusception, the sex ratio was 3:1 (M:F) and the condition was most frequently found in infants (77.78%).
(8) Automobile accidents were found to be commonest cause of the "various accidents"(62.86%)
(9) Scalding was the most common type of "burns" (62.69% )
(10) Amongst operation performed, intestinal segmental resection with end to end anastomosis(14.87%) was done most frequently followed by appendectomy (13.85%).
(11) There were 91 cases with postoperative complications (23.33%) ; wound infedtions (32.09%)and pulmonary complications (28.36%) were the most frequently encountered.
(12) Colostomy was accompanied by the highest mortality (80%) due to postoperative complications such as electrolytes imbalances, acute renal failure and pulmonary complications.
